Hoppin’ Frog, Fat Head’s win beer festival medals
Hoppin’ Frog Brewery just keeps winning medals.The Akron brewer picked up two honors at the Great American Beer Festival last weekend: a gold for its B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout and a bronze for its Barrel Aged Naked Evil BBW, a barleywine.“It’s nice to bring home hardware for all of us to celebrate,” owner and brewer Fred Karm said Monday. “We’re ecstatic. I’m very happy because we work very hard.”B.O.R.I.S. won in the imperial stout category, while Naked Evil won in the wood- and barrel-aged strong beer category.It’s the second gold medal for B.O.R.I.S., which also won in 2008.“We truly have a gold medal-winning recipe,” Karm said. “For me, that’s awesome.”Hoppin’ Frog, which uses a frog hoisting a mug of beer for its logo, sells its beer in 22-ounce bottles.The small production brewery in an industrial park near the Akron Airdock wasn’t the only Ohio winner.Fat Head’s Brewery & Saloon, a brewpub in North Olmsted, won gold and bronze medals for its Battle Axe Baltic Porter and Head Hunter IPA, respectively.Fat Head brewer and co-owner Matt Cole said he was thrilled with the medals, especially since the American-style India pale ale (IPA) category had the most entries at 176.Head Hunter won a silver medal last year.Battle Axe won in the Baltic-style porter category.Brewers from the Pizza Port, a California brewery that often wins at the event, kept coming over to taste the Head Hunter.“When guys like that who’ve won consistently tell you that your beer is absolutely stunning, you might be onto something good,” Cole said.The Great American Beer Festival, held each year in Denver, is the largest commercial beer competition in the world.
